Our DMV Teenage Online Instruction Program in Williamsburg, VA, consists of at least 30 hours of instruction, plus a 90 minute parent-teen video. It includes alcohol safety, drug abuse awareness, aggressive driving, distracted driving, pedestrian and bicycle safety, handicapped parking, fuel-efficient driving practices, motorcycle awareness, and organ and tissue donation awareness as required by law.
You must be at least 15 years and 6 months old to take the online driver education course. All individuals who elect to take the class component of driver education must take the online course through a DMV-licensed driver training school. Homeschooled students are exempt from this requirement. To benefit from the course, you must work independently and be comfortable using a computer.

Online Course Registration and Completion
To register for our online course, complete the Patriot Driving School, Inc. Teenage Application. Once we receive your application and payment, we will contact the National Driver Training Institute to initiate the process for you to begin your course. They will immediately notify you of your username, password, or special authorization code to take the course and test.
Once you receive this information, you can log in and begin the approved online course as instructed. Upon completing the theory portion of your course plus watching a 90-minute parent-teen video, you will receive a directive to return to Patriot to take the final exam.

Online Course Registration and Completion
You must pass your final exam to complete your online course successfully. To take the final exam, you must make an appointment with Patriot. We are located at 108 Tewning Road, Williamsburg, VA 23188.
On the day and time of your appointment for your final exam, please take note of the following:
- Bring photo identification (DMV-issued identification card, school-issued identification card, valid passport, or military identification)
- A parent, legal guardian, or foster parent must accompany you to sign the paperwork.
- Balance Due
Patriot will provide you with a school-owned computer for your final exam. Our licensed instructor will log in to the course and open the testing site for each student who will enter their seven-digit student authorization code. You will take the final exam online with the licensed instructor’s presence. The online course grades the test and reveals the results.
If you fail the final exam, you can review any section of the completed course to prepare to take the final exam again. You and the instructor will agree on the day and time of the re-exam.
Behind-the-Wheel Requirements (Individually Scheduled Based on Student Availability)
The DMV requires 14 periods of in-car instruction: 7 behind the wheel and 7 observations. Each session consists of 2 periods: 1 for driving and 1 for observing. The DMV also requires 45 hours, 15 of which must be at night, of supervised driving with a parent.

- Turnabouts and U-Turns
- 2-Point Turns
- 3-Point Turns in Residential Areas
- Angle Parking
- Perpendicular Parking
- Parallel Parking
- Interstate Driving—Getting On and Off
- Using Regular Ramps and Weave-Lane Ramps
- Off-Road Recovery and Evasive Maneuvers
- City and County Driving
Final Driving Test
When the students pass the final driving test, they receive a temporary license for 180 days. This DMV license and their learner’s permit will allow them to drive alone.

DMV Class Instruction Completed Elsewhere
If your teenage driver only needs the behind-the-wheel instruction, submit the “Original Verification of Completion” of the DMV classroom requirements with the application. The DMV requires this “Original Verification of Completion” before we can begin the behind-the-wheel instruction.
