DMV requires 36 classroom periods of instruction allowing 2 periods a day. A period is 50 minutes. During the public
school year our classes meet at night from 6:00PM until 7:45PM on Monday thru Thursday for 18 nights. During the Summer, the
DMV allows 4 periods of classroom instruction. Our classes meet in the morning from 8:00AM until 11:30AM, Monday thru Friday
for 9 mornings.
Classroom attendance is DMV mandatory, therefore any time
missed must be made up according to DMV regulations.
classes meet the DMV requirement for teenagers who are required to take a Recertification Course. (Three time failures)
The 90 minute parent/teen component must
be taken after the 36 periods of classroom instruction and before the behind the wheel instruction may begin. Only students
outside of Planning District 8 are allowed by law to complete the 90 minute component online. Thus, Williamsburg - James City
County School students and their parents can take the 90 minute parent/teen component together online. We will provide you
with the information you need to complete this component.
BEHIND THE WHEEL REQUIREMENTS (Individually scheduled
based on student availability)
The DMV requires 14 periods of In-Car instruction,
7 behind the wheel and 7 observation. Each sesson is 2 periods, 1 driving and 1 observing. Plus, the DMV requires 45 hours,
15 must be at night, of supervised driving with a parent.
The skills taught
during each sesson are:
- Stopping/Starting, Right/Left Turns, Turnabouts-U Turn, 2 Point Turns, 3 Point Turns
in Residential areas, then city and county driving.
- Angle Parking, then city and county driving.
Parking, then city and county driving.
- Parallel Parking, then city and county driving.
- Interstate Driving-
getting on and off, using regular ramps and weave-lane ramps, then city and county driving.
- Off-road Recovery and
Evasive Maneuvers, then city and county driving.
- Final Driving Test
students pass the Final Driving Test, they will be given a Temporary License for 180 days. This DMV License and their Learner's
Permit allows them to drive alone. During this period they will be notified to attend a Court Ceremony with their parent to
receive their actual VA Driving License.
DMV CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION COMPLETED ELSEWHERE
If your teenage driver only needs the BEHIND THE WHEEL
INSTRUCTION, submit the "VERIFICATION OF COMPLETION" of the DMV classroom requirements with the application. The
DMV requires this "VERTIFICATION OF COMPLETION" before we can begin your BEHIND THE WHEEL INSTRUCTION. After
rceiving your "VERTIFICATION OF COMPLETETION" then the DMV allows us to individually schedule the
BEHIND THE WHEEL INSTRUCTION sessions.
Also, as of July 1, 2018, you must also submit a certificate of completion of the 90 minute parent/teen component
from his/her high school. This applies to Williamsburg - James City County School students only.

ONLINE CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION
We have partnered with National Driver Training Institue, 800-942-2050, for your convenience! Our Virginia
"DMV is committed to promoting transportation safety through the certification of quality driver training programs. If
you have comments or concerns about this course, call our toll-free number: 1-877-885-5790." The program consists of
at least 30 hours of instruction and includes components about alcohol safety, drug abuse awareness, aggressive driving, distracted
driving, pedestrian and bicycle safety, handicapped parking, fuel efficient driving practices, motorcycle awareness, and organ
and tissue donation awareness as required by law. You must be at least 15 years and 6 months old to take the online driver
education course. All individuals who elect to take the classroom component of the driver education course online must take
the online course through a DMV licensed driver training school. Homeschooled students are exempt from this requirement. In
order to benefit from the course, you must be able to work independently and be comfortable with using a computer.
To register for our Online
Course, complete the Patriot Driving School, Inc. Teenage Application. Once we receive your application and payment, we will
contact National Driver Training Instute to initiate the process for you
to begin your course. They will immediately issue you notification of your user name, password, or special
authorization code to take the course and test. Your student login link will be: http://www.usdrivertraining.com/login-va.php
Once you receive this information, you
are ready to log in and begin the approved online course as instructed. Upon successful completion of the theory portion of
your course, you will receive a directive to return to Patriot Driving School, Inc. to take the Final Exam. You will be given
written verification of completion of the theory portion of driver education. This document verifies to Patriot Driving School,
Inc. that you have completed this portion of the course and are ready to take the Final Exam.
You must pass your Final Exam to successfully

On the day and
time of your appointment for your Final Exam, you must bring the following to Patriot Driving School, Inc. :
1. Photo identification (DMV
issued identification card, school issued identification card, valid passport or military identification)
2. Written verification from National
Driver Training Institute of completion of the theory portion of driver education
3. A completed "Parental Consent for Online Driver
Education Examination" (DTS 62), if you are under age 18
4. Proof of the completion of the additional 90-minute parent/teen course if you are
under age 18 and live in Planning District 8 (counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, and cities of Alexandria,
Fairfax, Manassas, and Manassas Park)
Patriot Driving School, Inc. will provide you with a school owned computer for your Final Exam. Our licensed instructor
will log in to the course and open the testing site for each student who presents the written verification of completion document
entering their seven digit student authorization code. You will take the Final Exam online in the presence of the licensed
instructor. The online course grades the test and reveals the results. If you pass the course, the instructor will receive
the certification of completion for you. Now, you can continue with the Behind - the - Wheel portion of the
course with Patriot Driving School, Inc. If you choose to do Behind-the-Wheel with another school, the instructor will issue
the certification of completion to you. If you fail the Final Exam, you will be allowed to review any section of the completed
course to prepare to take the Final Exam again. You and the instructor will agree on the day and time of the re-exam.
classroom component of driver education must be completed through a DMV-licensed online driver training school prior
to completing the online 90 minute parent/teen component. After you pass the Final Exam, we will provide you with the information
for the 90 minute parent/teen component.
